Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology (13 Hrs.)

This module introduces students to the various body systems and how the systems interact with one another. Students are also introduced to homeostasis and immunity. Twelve body systems are explored: Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Sensory, Circulatory, Lymphatic, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, Endocrine, and Reproductive. Students learn the structure, function, and diseases and disorders for each body system.

Unit: Anatomy and Physiology Basics
Description
This unit introduces students to basic body structure and processes. Students define "anatomy" and "physiology" and identify structures in a typical cell. They learn about the processes involved in metabolism, mitosis, and meiosis. And they distinguish tissues, organs, and systems. Students learn about the goal of homeostasis and the interdependence of body systems. They also identify abnormal cell conditions and name types of immunity.

Lessons
  1. Basic Body Structure
  2. Disease and Immunity
  3. Quiz
Unit: Integumentary System
Description
This unit outlines the functions and the parts of the integumentary system. Students discover that the main function of this system is to cover and protect the body. They name the layers of the skin and distinguish glands in the skin. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of the integumentary system.

Lessons
  1. Integumentary System
  2. Diseases and Disorders
  3. Quiz
Unit: Skeletal System
Description
This unit outlines the functions and the parts of the skeletal system. Students discover that the main function of this system is to give shape to and protect the body. They classify bones by shape and identify bones of the body. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of the skeletal system.

Lessons
  1. Skeletal System
  2. Diseases and Disorders
  3. Quiz
Unit: Muscular System
Description
This unit outlines the functions and the parts of the muscular system. Students discover that the main function of this system is to supply the body with movement. They identify common traits of muscles and define types of body movements. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of the muscular system.

Lessons
  1. Muscular System
  2. Diseases and Disorders
  3. Quiz
Unit: Nervous System
Description
This unit outlines the functions and the parts of the nervous system. Students discover that the main function of this system is to send and receive impulses to direct body activities. They define types of nerve cells, name the main divisions of the system, and identify the parts of the brain. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of the nervous system.

Lessons
  1. Nervous System
  2. Diseases and Disorders
  3. Quiz
Unit: Sensory System
Description
This unit covers the special senses of vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Students discover the processes involved with each of these senses, and they learn that the main function of the sensory system is to receive stimuli to allow the body to react to changes. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of this system.

Lessons
  1. Intro to the Sensory System
  2. Vision
  3. Hearing
  4. Smell, Taste, and General Senses
  5. Sensory System Diseases and Disorders
  6. Quiz
Unit: Cardiovascular System
Description
This unit outlines the functions and the parts of the cardiovascular system. Students discover that the main function of this system is to carry oxygen and nutrients to body tissues and remove waste from them. Students learn how the heart pumps blood throughout the body, and they list the components of blood. They also explore common diseases and disorders of the cardiovascular system.

Lessons
  1. Cardiovascular System
  2. Diseases and Disorders
  3. Quiz
Unit: Lymphatic System
Description
This unit outlines the functions and the parts of the lymphatic system. Students discover that the main function of this system is to fight infection and disease to protect the body. They define "lymph" and "antibody" and compare lymphatic vessels to blood vessels. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of the lymphatic system.

Lessons
  1. Lymphatic System
  2. Diseases and Disorders
  3. Quiz
Unit: Respiratory System
Description
In this unit, students will learn about the respiratory system. They will distinguish between ventilation, respiration, and oxygenation, and they will learn the difference between external and internal respiration. Students will also identify the major structures of the respiratory system and describe how the diaphragm and intercostal muscles aid in breathing. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of the respiratory system.

Lessons
  1. Introduction
  2. The Respiratory System
  3. Diseases and Disorders
  4. Quiz
Unit: Digestive System
Description
This unit outlines the functions and the parts of the digestive system. Students discover that the main function of this system is to take in nutrients from food and water and eliminate solid waste. They learn that food is chemically broken down into three forms that can be used by body cells--fat, carbohydrates, and protein. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of the digestive system.

Lessons
  1. Digestive System
  2. Diseases and Disorders
  3. Quiz
Unit: Urinary System
Description
This unit outlines the functions and the parts of the urinary system. Students discover that the main function of this system is to filter the blood and eliminate metabolic waste. They learn how urine is formed and removed from the body. Students also explore common diseases and disorders of the urinary system.

Lessons
  1. Urinary System
