The Surgical Patient (5 Hrs.)

Students identify the care needed by patients before and after surgery. Students dress and shave patients in preparation for surgery, and also support the patient emotionally. Students explore several surgical procedures in which health assistants may be involved. After surgery, students learn to recognize and report infection.

Description
This unit outlines types of surgery. Students compare and contrast elective, required, and emergency surgery. They also learn the differences between major and minor surgery. Students explore infection control and learn about medical and surgical asepsis. They are taught about standard precautions during surgery. Students delve into the role of health assistants in terms of providing psychological care to patients undergoing surgery. They also learn about fears that surgical patients may experience.

Unit: Preoperative Care
Description
In this unit, students learn about various aspects of preoperative care. They list what operative information includes and topics that postoperative instructions may include. They explore the health assistant's role in providing preoperative care and describe a preoperative checklist. Students define surgical consent. They are taught why a patient's skin may be prepared before surgery and review the assistant's responsibilities providing care on the day of surgery. Students find out how to prepare a patient's skin.

Description
This unit summarizes operative care. Students learn about minor surgical procedures and the role of the health assistant when assisting with them.
